Drug Payment Scheme
Under the Drug Payment Scheme, an individual or family only has to pay a maximum of €90 per month for approved prescribed drugs, medicines & certain appliances for use by that one person or member of their family in that one month.
The scheme applies to those who don’t have a Medical Card and normally have to pay the full cost for their medication. Any person who has a GP Visit Card can also apply for this scheme. It is not means tested.
Those eligible for the scheme are as follows:
An adult, their spouse, any child under 18 and any dependent who are aged between 18 & 23 and are in full-time education. Each person must have a PPS number.
You will not pay more that the €90 per month. Although you do not have to use the same pharmacy it is advised as it will prevent you been over charged. You must present your card each time you attend the pharmacy before anything can be dispensed. To apply for this scheme please fill in your details below and one of our pharmacies closed to you will be in contact.
There are many benefits to registering for the DPS Scheme, one of which is that certain products (normally available over the counter) are, when on prescription, covered by the scheme. This means that if your family’s monthly medicine bill exceeds €90 per month, you may not have to pay for your OTC Medicines.

Medical Card Scheme You can apply for a medical card by either of the options below:
If you are issued with a Medical Card it allows you to receive certain healthservices free of charge which include:
Doctor Visits, Prescription Medicines, Certain Dental, Ophthalmic & Aural care, Hospital Care, Hospital Visits, Maternity Cash Grants, Medical & Midwifery Care for Mothers & some Personal & Social Services You may also be entitled to the following:
The Medical Card is valid for one year and once this year is up the person will receive a review form. If this form is not filled out on time, you may run the risk of losing the card or not been re-issued. Long Term Illness If you have a Long-Term Illness or Disability you may be entitled to join the Long-Term Illness Scheme. When you qualify for the scheme you will be issued with a log book that allows you to get drugs, medicines, medical & surgical appliances directly related to the treatment of your illness, free of charge. The illnesses that qualify for this scheme are as follows:
There is no income requirement or means test. Simply fill out the form at your Local Health Office and your Doctor or Consultant will sign the form to confirm your condition. The book will contain the type & quantity of drugs that you require for your condition. Your doctor needs to sign it before you can take it to the pharmacy. If you require surgical or medical appliances, you can obtain these at your local Health Office at no extra charge. Med 1 Form You may not be aware that you are entitled to Tax Relief on medical expenses that are not covered by the State or by Private Health Insurance. The cost of drugs prescribed by your doctor or consultant is an example of the medical expenses that attract Tax Relief. The first €125 in medical expenses per person does not qualify for relief. Where several dependants are the subject of a claim (i.e family members) the overall restriction is €250 for the group. For example, if a family member (who is DPS Registered) pays €90 each month to their pharmacy the total amount spent in a year would come to €1020. This would mean that the family would be entitled to claim tax relief on €770.
There are a number of other medical expenses such as Doctor’s & Consultant visits that attract tax relief. These expenses are listed on the Med 1 Form which we have attached.
