Drug Payment Scheme

Under the Drug Payment Scheme, an individual or family only has to pay a maximum of €90 per month for approved prescribed drugs, medicines & certain appliances for use by that one person or member of their family in that one month.

The scheme applies to those who don’t have a Medical Card and normally have to pay the full cost for their medication. Any person who has a GP Visit Card can also apply for this scheme. It is not means tested.

Those eligible for the scheme are as follows:
An adult, their spouse, any child under 18 and any dependent who are aged between 18 & 23 and are in full-time education. Each person must have a PPS number.

You will not pay more that the €90 per month. Although you do not have to use the same pharmacy it is advised as it will prevent you been over charged. You must present your card each time you attend the pharmacy before anything can be dispensed.  To apply for this scheme please fill in your details below and one of our pharmacies closed to you will be in contact.

There are many benefits to registering for the DPS Scheme, one of which is that certain products (normally available over the counter) are, when on prescription, covered by the scheme. This means that if your family’s monthly medicine bill exceeds €90 per month, you may not have to pay for your OTC Medicines.

Med 1 Claim Form

The first €125 in medical expenses per person does not qualify for relief. Where several dependants are the subject of a claim (i.e family members) the overall restriction is €250 for the group. For example, if a family member (who is DPS Registered) pays €90 each month to their pharmacy the total amount spent in a year would come to €1020. This would mean that the family would be entitled to claim tax relief on €770. There are a number of other medical expenses such as Doctor’s & Consultant visits that attract tax relief. These expenses are listed on the Med 1 Form which we have attached.
