Hay Fever

Hay fever is an allergic reaction called by an allergy to pollen, which affects about 20% of the population.

It is that time of the year again when hay fever symptoms worsen, especially in those with a history of allergic eczema.

We at Bradleys Pharmacy are here to get you through the hay fever season and hopefully ease and prevent your symptoms.

Common Hay fever symptoms include

  • Sneezing
  • Runny/ blocked nose
  • Itchy/red/watery eyes
  • Cough- caused by post nasal drip

Practical things you can do to help reduce hay fever symptoms

  • Wear wraparound sunglasses
  • Close car windows
  • Avoid cutting the grass
  • Avoid fresh flowers in the house
  • Don’t sleep with windows open
  • Use Vaseline around nostril to reduce inhalation of pollen

The following lifestyle tips can help to reduce the symptoms of hay fever

  • Reduce stress
  • Exercise more
  • Healthy diet
  • Reduced alcohol intake
  • Adequate sleep

The following medications are used in the treatment and prevention of hay fever symptoms


Are all anti-histamines that block the effects of pollen and thus relieve symptosm. They do not cause drowsiness and are safe to take when driving.

Flixonase /Beconase

Are both steroid nasal sprays a good choice in the prevention and treatment of hay fever symptoms


is a unique product. It is a nasal spray which does not contain a steroid or decongestant. It creates a barrier on the nasal lining and helps to prevent the absorption of pollen. It is a great choice for those looking for a drug free option. It is suitable to use in children from 6years and also in pregnancy and breastfeeding.


Is another drug option in used in the treatment of hay fever. It works on the ancient Chinese principals of acupressure. It is suitable for use in adults and children over 3 years.


Is an eye drop which helps to reduce the effects of hayfever on the eyes

Zirtek Decongestant/Sudafed

Both of these products relieve symptoms such as blocked nose

Sudafed is available in tablet liquid and nasal spray

Zirtek Decongestant is a combined product that helps both blocked and runny nose
